Date Posted: October 09, 2026

Position:Motor Mechanic (General)

Salary: $80,000 to $90,000 per annum plus superannuation

Hours: 38 hours per week

Mode: Full-time

Location: McLaren Vale, South Australia

About us

Good Times Garage is a small, close-knit workshop on the Fleurieu, built on a love of cars and a great local community. From routine servicing to Troopy fit-outs and classic 4WD restorations, no two jobs are the same —

and we look after our customers long after they leave the workshop.

Your role

Carry out servicing, maintenance, fault diagnosis and mechanical repairs on light vehicles, including mechanical work associated with classic 4WD and Toyota LandCruiser Troop Carrier restoration projects.

You report to the Workshop Foreman, who coordinates work allocation and quality checks. You are expected to perform work independently within your demonstrated competence and authorisation, and seek guidance where findings are unclear or additional approval is required.

Key responsibilities

Servicing & repairs

  • Inspect and service engines, transmissions, suspension, steering, braking and related vehicle systems.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance, including oil changes, lubrication and adjustments in accordance with
    manufacturer specifications.
  • Dismantle and remove engine assemblies and mechanical components to inspect their condition and identify
    wear or damage.
  • Repair or replace worn and defective parts, and reassemble components.
  • Test and adjust repaired systems to confirm correct operation, including road testing where authorised.
  • Undertake mechanical repairs and component replacement as part of vehicle restoration projects.
  • Follow technical information, service data and workshop procedures.
  • Check completed work and present it for workshop quality review.
  • Maintain tools and equipment, and protect customer vehicles.

Fault finding & diagnosis

  • Systematically detect and diagnose mechanical and electrical faults in engines and vehicle components.
  • Use appropriate diagnostic equipment, computerised scan tools and testing procedures within your
    competence and authorisation.
  • Discuss unclear findings, changes to the repair approach and additional work or parts requirements with the
    Workshop Foreman before proceeding.
  • Interpret technical information and test results to identify faults and determine appropriate repairs.
  • Record diagnostic findings, test results and recommended repairs accurately.

Productivity & quality

  • Work towards the workshop target of at least 75% billable utilisation, measured as billable job hours against
available working hours using the agreed workshop method.
  • Record all time accurately, including servicing, repairs, diagnosis and non-billable work.
  • Complete work safely and accurately, and promptly report factors affecting productivity or quality.

Communication & teamwork

  • Keep job notes and parts records accurate, and provide technical information for customer updates through the agreed process.
  • Keep your work area clean, organised and safe, and work cooperatively with the team.
  • Confirm priorities with the Workshop Foreman when instructions are unclear or competing.

Health & safety: your duty of care

Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 (SA), every worker must take reasonable care for their own health and safety, take reasonable care that their acts or omissions don’t harm others, and follow reasonable safety instructions, policies and procedures. For you, that means following safe work practices and wearing the right PPE, using equipment only as trained and authorised, keeping the workshop tidy, and reporting hazards, incidents and

near misses straight away.

Authority & escalation

Check with the Foreman when

  • A task is outside your demonstrated competence or authorisation.
  • Findings are unclear or the repair approach needs to change.
  • You find a safety concern or unexpected fault.
  • Extra work, parts or cost may be needed.

Only where authorised

  • Allocating or managing workshop jobs.
  • Formally supervising apprentices.
  • Purchasing, quoting or approving customer work.
  • Final vehicle release.

Specialist work

(diesel, 4WD modifications, refrigerants and high-voltage systems) is allocated once competence is

confirmed and any required licence or authorisation is held.

What you bring

  • Minimum Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology, completed through an apprenticeship or an equivalent recognised trade pathway.
  • Practical experience as a motor mechanic, with sound diagnostic and repair skills.
  • Clear communication, accurate records and a commitment to safety and quality

Highly regarded: Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis or other advanced technical training.

Competence & licences

  • Practical competence confirmed through workplace assessment by the Foreman.
  • Task-specific licences or authorisations (e.g. ARC refrigerant handling) held before that work is allocated.
  • Current driver’s licence.

How we’ll know it’s going well

  • At least 75% billable utilisation, with work completed accurately and safely.
  • Few comebacks, and faults found systematically.
  • Job notes, parts and time records complete.
  • Concerns and delays raised early.

Flexibility & conditions

This PD is a guide, not a complete list of tasks, and we’ll review it together as the role develops. Workshop work involves standing, bending and manual handling, with noise, fluids and dust; we provide the right equipment and PPE and will consider reasonable adjustments. Hours and pay are set out in your employment contract.

Acknowledgement

I have read and discussed this position description and understand my role. It may be updated in consultation with me and does not replace my employment contract or entitlements.
